On Wednesdays, I go to Mililani for cycle class. It’s a smaller gym so going there is not as
hectic, but it certainly is not short on quirky members. For instance, on my way to the spinning room,
I pass a man with hair resembling a cup of shave ice. He has short shaved platinum blond hair. Half of it is dyed reddish pink, and the
other half has blue dots, like blobs of vanilla syrup, on his blond side.
A remix of “Sugar” by Flo Rida
starts off class, booming energy into the room.
Low blue lights shine down on us, and a cool breeze from the fans makes
the room a pleasant temperature. A
mirror reflects a blown up photo of black pavement set against green hills and
a blue sky to create the proper cycling mood.
Large windows on either side of the mirror give me a clear view of the
workout floor where members enjoy doing their own routines.
Within minutes, a man pushing
a varation of a flatbed like a sleigh down the hall catches my eye. Large weight plates, perhaps twenty pounds or
so, rest on a post on the cart. He is
leaning his entire body into it. Now that’s a different weight routine.
I reach down for my water bottle, preparing my body for the “standing
run” portion on the bike. The man from
the weight sleigh is closer to the window now.
He stacks a high step on top of a higher step, making a two and a half
to three foot tower. My jaw drops as I
watch him jump from the floor to the top of the steps in one bound. He must
be part kangaroo!.
