Day 261: Kaitlyn At Seventeen

This poem went through several revisions, and I finally came up with this.  The first version is in the post from Day 252.  Each poem I needed to write for my poetry class had to follow a certain theme.  This was the person poem.

Kaitlyn at Seventeen

Hair the color of warm chocolate kisses her face
And dangles above her broad shoulders,
Shoulders that have carried the weight of loss
Yet still hold her smiling face high.
Tiny dimples appear in her cheeks and chin
Whenever she laughs.
The golden ring at the center of her
Sea green eyes flames to life
When she talks about the TV shows she loves.
Behind her eyes, inside her mind, stands a brick
Red lighthouse. Inside, the beacon of Truth guides
Her ships of thought, sending away the U.S.S. Evil and Sad,
Welcoming H.M.S. Helpful and Joy.

Her arms are always eager to hold
her grey and black tabby Felix.
Her voice, pleasant as the sun,
Offers words of encouragement,
And her wisdom leaves family in respect.
After she hears my messy room has me
stressed me out, she sneaks to clean it.
At the end of the day, my sister
and I talk long past bedtime.
