The Prompt: Flesh out this character. Tom wants to be a ninja so
he can impress his girlfriend. He’s very clumsy though.
Tom studied the pamphlet he had in his hand. “You too can be a ninja!” the headline boldly
proclaimed.
“Yeah, sure,” Tom scowled.
He stared from the paper ad to his laptop computer that was
on his patio table. The screen was
paused at an Asian dressed in black posed in a studio. Tom walked across his grass to press play and
vainly attempted to mimic the moves the Ninja Master had to bestow upon
him. Tom lifted the opposite arm and leg
and somehow managed to cross his legs, causing him to lose his balance.
He brushed the grass stains off his shirt. “I should have put the balance more in the
balls of my feet. Well, twenty-two times
the charm.”
While Tom was rewinding and pausing the video to try to
master the first move, his mind wandered to why he was even putting himself
through such strenuous activities in the first place. Amanda was the prettiest thing his eyes had
even seen. He had first met her at her
job at Game Stop. He came in at least
three times a week to buy something or ask her opinions about the games he was
considering to buy. Through their
conversations, Tom had learned much about her, and while he was smitten, Amanda
didn’t seem to feel as strongly. She had
even rejected him the first couple times he asked her on a date. Asking her to a movie she had wanted to see
finally did the trick, and with his urgings, she had decided to give him a
chance.
Tom had been so happy, but he was nervous. He had a job at Walmart and had always been
socially awkward. He had only been
dating Amanda a couple weeks, and he decided that he needed to do something
outstanding or heroic to keep her interested.
The heroic part didn’t work out well (the fire department wouldn’t let
him be a volunteer), so he work on the outstanding part. Amanda had a fascination with ninjas, in
movies and video games, so Tom decided that becoming one would be the best way
to win her heart. He didn’t realize
though that Amanda was starting to like him just the way he was.
