Day 160: Story Using My Reinvented Cliche

Should be Day 188.  I'm posting the entries I had wanted to post earlier.

I cringed after the teacher announced who my science partner would be.  I had hoped it was going to be Seth, at least he was industrious, or Michael.  He was known to be one of the most intelligent kids in class.  Having my best friend Joey for a partner was a fantasy because there’s no way we’d be able to concentrate enough on our project to get it done.  My teacher was insightful enough to see that.  Why couldn’t she be equally wise enough in choosing my partner? Bryce’s attitude about school did not sit on the same-sized hill as my own approach to it.  He skipped classes, turned in homework late, and mouthed off during discussion time.  I was responsible about my assignments and really cared about what we were learning.  This unit was giving me problems though, and I had hoped my partner could have helped me.  That idea was shot down.

The more I thought about my predicament, the more upset I became.  If I would have touched an ear of corn about now, it would have turned into popcorn.  I was thankful that the bell rang after our teacher had finished pairing us off.  Bryce was one of the first ones out of there.  I grimaced, seeing that this was just the beginning of what I had to look forward to working with him.  I decided to go after him and at least set up a meeting to discuss a topic.  Bryce was talking in the hallway with a few of his friends.  I leaned against a nearby locker and tried not to eavesdrop.

“Henry, you’re still here,” he said to me after his friends had left.

“Yeah, I wanted to discuss our project.  When’s a good time to meet you?”

“I can meet you in the library after class.  Hey, I’m glad Ms. Mulligan made us partners.  You’re really smart, and I know with your help that I can actually hand in a project on time.  I seem to work better with a partner because it forces me to sit down and work.  Anyways, see ya later.”

I stood stunned as he walked past me.  Bryce was willing to work.  Maybe this wouldn’t be such a bad project after all.
