Day 65: Don't Read

I'm not feeling very inspired right now.  :(  This is terrible.  I'm writing just to fulfill my challenge.  This isn't real writing.

The Prompt: Use this as a first line for a short story:  It was a dark and stormy night.

It was a dark and stormy night.  Maria was trying to hold back the tears.  She hated being alone in the dark to begin with, but to be stranded, alone, outside, with a car that wouldn't start, in the rain, was nearly unbearable.  She struggled to hold back the tears and tried to start the car again.  The engine revved and died, no different than the last seven times when she tried.

"I can't believe this," she set her head against the steering wheel.  "Why did I have to forget my cell phone?"

The rainfall increased, almost sounding like hail on the car roof.  Maria looked up and a pair of headlights flashed in the distance.  She began to panic.  What if it was a killer?  I watch too many Criminal Minds episodes.  She'd be alone and defenseless, easy prey.  She frantically looked around in her car for some sort of weapon, but all she could come up with was the heel of her shoe.  Well, women have killed with their shoes before...in movies.

As the vehicle came closer, Maria could see it was a pick-up truck.  The trucker was nice enough to have something to tow her away, and he had a cell phone that she was able to use to call for help.
