Day 164: What's in My Purse?

I heard on a show I was watching that what’s in your purse can give insight to your personality, so I’m writing a quick story of what is inside one young adult’s purse.

My purse is black, so it matches with everything I wear.  It’s not an overly large purse, but it is large enough to accommodate what I carry.  I don’t it to be too heavy because that can create poor posture.

The outside pocket has my cell phone, easily accessible at all times.  The front two pockets also have pepper spray, my compact and favorite color lip gloss, travel perfume spray, hand sanitizer, and a flashlight.  You never know when you might need a flashlight.

The main portion has my travel makeup bag where I have a few different colors of eyeshadow, my mascara, blush, and concealer, along with some cleansing facial wipes.  Since I live in Seattle, I always make sure I carry around my umbrella.  I still keep my planner with my calendar and phone numbers in it.  My cell carries a lot of that information, but using my planner seems to help me remember my appointments better.  I also keep a few paperclips, pens, and a small pad of paper handy to jot down things.  I keep a small bag of trail mix or chewy bar in my purse too, in case I’m out late.

My inner zippered pocket is where I keep my private items, such as my wallet and spare house key.  My coupon book is in there too, since I use it with my wallet.  I have so many receipts in the pocket that sometimes I can’t find anything in that pocket.  I never know if I might need to return something or prove that I was at the store.

Day 163: Ninja School

The Prompt:  Flesh out this character.  Tom wants to be a ninja so he can impress his girlfriend.  He’s very clumsy though.

Tom studied the pamphlet he had in his hand.  “You too can be a ninja!” the headline boldly proclaimed.

“Yeah, sure,” Tom scowled.

He stared from the paper ad to his laptop computer that was on his patio table.  The screen was paused at an Asian dressed in black posed in a studio.  Tom walked across his grass to press play and vainly attempted to mimic the moves the Ninja Master had to bestow upon him.  Tom lifted the opposite arm and leg and somehow managed to cross his legs, causing him to lose his balance.

He brushed the grass stains off his shirt.  “I should have put the balance more in the balls of my feet.  Well, twenty-two times the charm.”

While Tom was rewinding and pausing the video to try to master the first move, his mind wandered to why he was even putting himself through such strenuous activities in the first place.  Amanda was the prettiest thing his eyes had even seen.  He had first met her at her job at Game Stop.  He came in at least three times a week to buy something or ask her opinions about the games he was considering to buy.  Through their conversations, Tom had learned much about her, and while he was smitten, Amanda didn’t seem to feel as strongly.  She had even rejected him the first couple times he asked her on a date.  Asking her to a movie she had wanted to see finally did the trick, and with his urgings, she had decided to give him a chance.

Tom had been so happy, but he was nervous.  He had a job at Walmart and had always been socially awkward.  He had only been dating Amanda a couple weeks, and he decided that he needed to do something outstanding or heroic to keep her interested.  The heroic part didn’t work out well (the fire department wouldn’t let him be a volunteer), so he work on the outstanding part.  Amanda had a fascination with ninjas, in movies and video games, so Tom decided that becoming one would be the best way to win her heart.  He didn’t realize though that Amanda was starting to like him just the way he was.

Day 162: Battle of the Heroes

The Prompt: Spiderman and Wolverine have a battle.  Who wins and why?  Write a short story.

I know next to nothing about superheroes.  I am going to make this one about Spiderman and Superman.  This will be a friendly battle to practice their abilities and have fun.  They’re not actually enemies.

Superman stood on the sidewalk.  His muscles were tensed, and his ears were attentive to the noises he heard around him.  Rush hour traffic had started twenty minutes ago, and the streets were still half-empty as men and women were just starting to go to work.  He was on a sidewalk near the end of the street, so not many people were nearby.  His eyes stood fixed on the alleyway to his left.

Spiderman climbed down the fire escape ladder on the side of the old brick building.  He was hoping to approach his target from the ground then use his web to fling him back up out of danger.  He jumped softly to the dirt, skipping the last four steps.  He was used to walking silently in order to not be detected.  Once he was at the edge of the alley’s wall, he pressed his back against it and poked his head over so slightly around the corner.

Superman made a running bound towards the alley, and Spiderman cocked his wrist and used his web to hoist himself to the opposite wall.  Superman picked up the dumpster and chucked it the building’s roof, but Spiderman moved out of the way too quickly and leapt onto the fire escape ladder.  Superman ran to it, and his biceps flexed as he tore the metal off the side of the building.  Once Spiderman felt the ladder slip from under him, he used his web to help him grab the edge of the building and flip himself onto the roof.

Superman made footholes into the wall by punching as he walked upwards.  Once he got to the top of the building, he saw Spiderman was already leaping from building to building, Superman ran after him and could easily keep up.  After leaping over four buildings, he stopped and ripped a weather vane off the roof.  He watched Spiderman shoot out his web and swing with it like a vine.  Taking aim, he threw the weather vane at Spiderman’s web, which snapped on impact.  Spiderman fell off the twelve story building but as able to catch onto one of the window sills.  Superman ran after the swinging monkey, using any smaller object he could find on the roof to hurtle at him. The two continued in this fashion until they were bored and made a truce.
